The European Stonechat is a sparrow-sized insectivorous passerine bird. Unlike many other passerines, it is a sedentary bird, staying close to its natal site throughout the year. The problem is that during harsh winters, populations of the species can collapse due to a lack of insects. Over the last decade, thanks to a series of mild winters in Europe, numbers have risen sharply and can now be seen quite frequently even at higher latitudes in Europe.
